Hello and thank you for your help in advance.
I have Windows 2000 SP4 and when I go to install RS, the system check
returns "Authz is not installed on this computer". When I take the install
to the next step, there is only the option to install Client Components and
not Server Components which I need. Any ideas?

Authorization problems with SQL Developer's edition

I just installed developer's edition on a new laptop. Other machines in the
network cannot connect to this new instance.
At first it was TIMEOUTS - so I turned off the new WINDOWS firewall feature
(we are inside a small network anyway - no need for local firewalls - I
guess).
Then it was trying to connect as USERNAME = GUEST. I found GUEST as a
username under COMPUTER MANAGEMENT and disabled it.
Now it's getting login failed for user NULL.
Seems it's not on the network like the old laptop was. The old laptop did
not authenticate to the network, it logged in locally, but the SQL instance
was visible and connectable.
I cannot seem to add DOMAIN\usernames to this instance.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated.
I would try to connect to it via its IP address using a SQL Server login just
in case it is a DNS issue. Just a thought...

I did not join the domain properly with this new laptop.
Now that I've done that it's all set...

Authentication/Security Issue!

Hi,
I have installed SQL reporting services on the local system test machine
[standard edition] which points to a DB that is on a different machine.
Everything works ok if I use a domain account and assign security rights for
each report. But in production I will want to have a local windows account
and assign read rights on the reports individually. I tried doing this in
the test environment.
When I try to access the site using the IP I get the windows log on box.
After entering the local user account I can get to the reports but as soon
as I try and run the report it gives me this error:
The permissions granted to user [domain\user] are insufficient for
performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)
The problem is i am not logged on as a domain user but as a local machine
user.
Was wondering if any of you have come across this error before and possibly
know the cause/solution to this.

Even if you go to an IP address for the server, when you run a report
the report is rendered by an IFRAME element with the URL pointing to
the report server by name.
To verify this behavior, just right-click in the report area, select
properties, and look at the URL. You'll notice your address bar might
look like http://x.x.x.x, but the report properties URL will indicate
http://reporting. The server always uses the <ReportServerUrl> element
in RSWebApplication.config.
Since the IFRAME points you back to the server by name, IE is probably
automatically logging you in again with your domain account, which is
not in a Browse role. You can change IE's behavior in Tools ->
Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> User Authentication
(at the bottom of the list).

authentication with mssql server

Currently all of our MS SQL Server databases have been installed so as once an administrator connects to the server they can get access to the SQL Server database. We would like to change this to ensure that no matter who you are you have to enter a valid username and password in SQL Server to connect to the database. I cannot seem to find out how to do this. All help will be greatly appreciated.

local databases problems occur.

XP SP2 a dialog entitled 'SQL Server Login' is displayed and access to the
database is not allowed.
There are also issues in relation to the running of the SQL Server Agent.
When working remotely users cannot start the service properly, they receive
the following message :
'The sqlserveragent service on local computer started and then stopped.
Some services stop automatically if they have nothing to do , for example,
the performance logs and alerts service'.
My suspicion is that it is an XP SP2 issue.
There may be issues related to the installation of IIS as well but I'm not
sure.

Authentication on 2003 server

Hi
I've installed 2003 server and RS with no problems. Also got Sharepoint
Services to run 100%. The only issue is that every time i click on a report a
username, password dialog appears. On XP this didn't happen. Everything is on
NT integrated security and my account is part of the admins group. Any ideas ?Does you Windows 2003 box belong to your login domain?

Authentication mode, connecting from webpage

Hello,
I need help setting up SQL Server Express edition.
What I did so far:
1) Downloaded and installed it with windows authentication
2) Installed SQL Server Management Studio Express
3) Created a database
4) Realized I needed SQL Authentication for connecting via php page.
5) Followed these instructions to enable SQL Authentication
Now that SQL Authentication is enabled, how do I create a user account that I can use in php pages to connect to the database?

Hey Kurt. See the documentation in Books Online for the following commands:

CREATE LOGIN

CREATE USER

The create login statement will create a user on your server, then run the create user statement to allow that user access to the database(s) on your system.

You need to run the CREATE USER command to give the login you just created access to the database(s) you want it to have access to. Then you have to provide the appropriate permissions to that user within the database in question (i.e. select from tables, update tables, delete tables and records, etc., etc.)

Authentication and Internet

Hey,

I just installed the lastest verion of ms sql server. I'm new to ms sql so please keep that in mind :-).

I installed the server, and read through a large amount of the help documentation. I then created my nwind directory in my wwwroot folder.

I created a new database, set that as the default database, then I created a simple table in this database with a few entries. I used

http://<SERVERIP>/nwind?sql=SELECT+*+FROM+test+FOR+XML+AUTO&root=root

to query and test my database. it worked, YAY. However at this point in the nwind properties I was using windows authentication.

This worked fine for me, and accross the network. However its not a nice solution as I'd rather not make users log in. (incidently when I got people to test this across the internet they just saw a blank white page, not sure why).

So I decided to use the third option on the security page. (forget the wording, but the option where you send a clear login text, or something to that affect).

When I tested this, the browser said "cannot find server". and displayed the typical you've deleted everything signs. However when I changed it back to windows authentication is started working again.

I then tested the always login as, and created an account. This gave me the same result.

So now, basically I'm trying to get the third option (sending a clear login text) to work. But I have no idea what to do to fix it, and I can't find any useful documentation anywhere.

ISS Server is installed and working fine. And wwwroot is the root dir of the webserver.

.net is installed, and it has every patch (windows) I could find. There is no firewall running. I'm connected to the internet through a router.

I'm forwarding the ports 20, 21, 40 to the computer (but I'm trying to view it internally so none of that should matter at this stage).

I have Server2003/SQL2000/IIS6 and have just installed Reporting services. I
have two websites on the server. Access to reports is fine using the
http://servername/reportServer, and using IUSR_servername, but I would like
to have reports available via the Internet using domain names. Saw the
earlier post and read I needed to change configuration. I've tried:

Can I do this?

On the business i;m working on, I've installed MSDE on my client computer.
So far i've worked with SQL sever 2000
now i transfered to sql server 2005.
and i tried to attach one of my files. It gave me Error because my DB i;m
trying to attach is bigger then 2GB (which is not possible according to
microsoft Licence)
now what can i do,
if i instead of detach and attach i do backup and restore it allow me to do
that?Roy

1. If the db has a lot of free space, see if shrinking will reduce the size.
2. Move some tables into a new database, then shrink and attach both.
3. Delete and/or move some of your older data into a new database, then
shrink and attach both.

attaching SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 Express

If someone can help. I just installed SQL Server 2005 Express. I am trying to attach a SQL Server 2000 database so I can work on it. I am getting the following error.

Msg 5118, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The file "L:\SQL Data\Data\Dougins_Data.mdf" is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup. The file must be decompressed.

Msg 1813, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

Could not open new database 'Dougins'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted.

I cannot find instructions in help to decompress the file. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I dont think so there is file compression is related to database. Check with your windows folks since file compression are done at the OS level. Ask them to decompress the files and you should be good to go.

Attaching previous database to new installation

I have a Active/Passive cluster and have installed the SQL 2005.
What I would like to know, before I proceed with my configurations (since it
is my first time in a cluster environment) is whether I will need to attach
the database (lets call it DBX) to SQL Server on both the servers seperately,
or do i only have to attach the database DBX to SQL Server on the active
machine.
Like i said this is my first time so i want to be very sure before i proceed.
You don't attach the database to any node. Rather, you attach it to the SQL
Server instance regardless which node the instance may be running at the
time. In general, a SQL Server operation doesn't care where the SQL instance
is running.

Then, as Linchi stated, you must run the attach process through the SQL
Server instance, just like you would on a stand-alone system.

and database from C partition and he created new database and tried to Attach
from D partion but that gives an error(Error 9003: The

another problem is that latest backup is not available only old backup
available.
we restored old backup and tried to attach those files (300 MB and 12 GB)
but didnt work.. another error comes that CAN NOT ATTACH FILES FROM
DIFFERENT DATABASES.

Was the file detached correctly?
Try renaming the log file and using sp_attach_single_file_db to create a new
log, and then detaching/move/attaching the log or in SQL 2005 you can use
CREATE DATABASE with the ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG option instead of
sp_attach_single_file_db.
